What Is the UK Electronic Travel Authorisation?

UK ETA

The UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (UK ETA) is a mandatory digital travel permission required for certain travellers who can visit the United Kingdom without applying for a visa.

The UK ETA allows short-term travel to the UK for tourism, visiting family or friends, transit, or limited business activities. It is issued by the UK Home Office and is intended for temporary visits only.

The UK ETA is electronically linked to your passport and must be approved before you travel to the United Kingdom. The UK ETA is not a visa. Holding an approved ETA allows you to travel to the UK, but it does not guarantee entry to the UK.

You can apply for a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) directly through the official UK Government website for the standard government fee without our additional assistance service fee.

Who Needs a UK ETA?

You may need to apply for a UK ETA if:

  • You are a national of a country that does not normally require a visa for short visits to the UK

  • You are travelling to the UK for tourism, visiting family or friends, short business activities, or transit

  • You are transiting through the UK in situations where an ETA is required

  • You do not hold a valid UK visa or UK immigration permission

Travellers who are required to hold a UK visa must obtain that visa before travelling. A UK ETA cannot be used instead of a visa.

The UK ETA scheme is being introduced in phases. Many visa-free nationals can already apply, and the requirement will apply fully to all eligible visa-exempt travellers before travel once the rollout is complete.

Eligibility depends on nationality, passport type, and travel purpose, and should always be confirmed before travel.

Who Does Not Need a UK ETA?

You do not need to apply for a UK ETA if you fall into one of the following categories:

  • British citizens, including dual citizens, travelling on a valid British passport or with a certificate of entitlement

  • Irish citizens

  • Travellers who already hold a valid UK visa

  • Travellers with valid UK immigration permission, including settled or pre-settled status

  • Holders of British Overseas Territories passports who have the right of entry to the UK

In limited situations, other exemptions may apply, such as certain crew members or travellers transiting without passing through UK border control. These exemptions depend on passport type and travel circumstances.

If you are unsure whether a UK ETA is required for your trip, eligibility should always be checked based on your nationality, passport type, and purpose of travel before departure.

1

A valid passport from an eligible country

What Can You Do on a UK ETA?

A UK ETA allows eligible travellers to:

  • Visit the UK for holidays or short stays

  • Visit family and friends

  • Attend short business meetings, conferences, or events

  • Transit through the UK, where permitted

All activities must be temporary and consistent with UK visitor rules. Paid work and long-term study are not permitted.

Length of Stay and Validity

A UK ETA is generally valid for up to two(2) years, or until your passport expires, whichever occurs first. It allows multiple journeys to the UK during its validity period.

Each visit must comply with UK visitor rules. Most travellers are normally permitted to stay for up to six months per visit.

You must leave the UK before your permitted stay ends, even if your UK ETA remains valid.

Key Eligibility Considerations

Each UK ETA application is assessed individually. UK authorities may consider:

  • Whether you genuinely intend to visit the UK temporarily

  • Your travel and immigration history

  • Whether you have sufficient funds for your stay

  • Evidence that you will leave the UK at the end of your visit

  • Whether you meet security, health, and suitability requirements

All information provided must be accurate and truthful. Incorrect or misleading information can result in the refusal of your application.

How to Apply for a UK ETA

The UK ETA application must be completed online before travelling to the United Kingdom.

Applications are submitted through online systems on GOV.UK and cannot be made on arrival or at the border.

The general process includes:

  • Checking whether a UK ETA is required

  • Providing personal, passport, and travel details

  • Answering security and background questions

  • Submitting the application online

  • Receiving the UK ETA electronically once approved

The UK ETA is digitally linked to your passport, and no physical document is issued.

You can apply for a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) directly through the official UK Government website for the standard government fee without our additional assistance service fee.

Travellers are advised to apply well in advance of travel, as approval is not guaranteed and processing times can vary.

UK ETA Conditions and Restrictions

Travelling on a UK ETA comes with conditions that must be followed while you are in the UK, including:

  • No paid or unpaid work

  • Study limited to short recreational courses

  • Each visit must not exceed the permitted visitor period

  • Compliance with all UK entry and stay conditions

Failure to follow these conditions may affect future travel to the United Kingdom.

Processing Times and Decision Making

Many UK ETA applications are processed quickly, but processing times can vary depending on:

  • Accuracy and completeness of the application

  • Individual background checks

  • Application volumes at the time of submission

Applying early and providing consistent information can reduce delays, but approval is never guaranteed.

Entry to the United Kingdom

A UK ETA allows you to travel to the United Kingdom, but UK border officials decide final permission to enter on arrival.

You may be asked to provide evidence of:

  • Return or onward travel

  • Sufficient funds for your stay

  • The purpose of your visit

Entry decisions are made under UK immigration law and are separate from ETA approval.
